Wolves win the East Yorkshire Cup

WE’VE WON THE CUP! The happy Driffield Wolves Under 9s team celebrates and holds on tight to the trophy

The under 9 year old team, the Driffield Wolves were invited to take part in the inaugural Long Riston and Arnold Gala Tournament against the hosts and teams from Hornsea and Bridlington. The Wolves returned home with the trophy and continue their great run of success in 2007.

Wolves started with a solid performance against Bridlington Rockets and finished 2-0, the winners with goals from George Watts and Leon Raines. Hirst in goal was rarely troubled with Baxter and Gosling solid in defence while Wright and Lim B-T were full of running.

Wolves followed up with a dominant display against Long Riston, racing into a 5-0 half-time lead with goals from Raines, Watts, a brace from Liam B-T, and a poacher’s goal from Wright. Gosling in defence was outstanding whilst Pallant came into the side and fitted in with ease and Baxter had a run in attack causing lots of problems for the defence - but it was Hirst with an extended run out of goal who scored the final goal to ease Wolves into the final with a game to play.

The final was a double-header with Wolves playing Hornsea to decide who would be Kings of East Yorkshire - and Driffield Wolves duly delivered with a 1-0 win.

reflect the dominance of the Wolves with Hirst in goal untroubled, mainly due to Player of the Tournament and captain for the day Joe Gosling putting in another outstanding display in defence alongside Sam Pallant, whilst Watts and Liam B-T ran the show from midfield allowing Wright, Raines and Baxter the freedom to attack the Hornsea defence. It was Raines who capped a fine tournament by scoring the winner to win the cup for Driffield.

Many thanks to the organisers, and to the sponsors Harrison Solway Logistics.
